A Beginner’s Guide to Installing a Theme in WordPress

Using WordPress for your blogging needs is a great choice. However, this content management system will require that you learn how to use different functions within the dashboard.

One of those functions is the theme function. This is found by going to Appearance >> Themes. Here you can upload or search for a new theme and activate it.

In this WordPress tutorial, we will show you how to install a new theme for your WordPress blog.

Uploading a New WordPress Theme

If you searched Google and found the perfect theme, you may have a .zip folder for the theme you want to use. This folder needs to be uploaded if you want to install and activate your new theme.

Start by going to Appearance >> Themes.

From here, you will need to click the button up at the top called, “Add New.”

This will take you to a screen with a search box and all types of other themes. However, when you want to upload a theme, you don’t need all this other stuff. Just click the “Upload Theme” button at the top.

Things to Consider When Choosing a WordPress Theme

With so many different WordPress themes available for use, it can be hard to find the right one for your needs. Every blog or website is different and you need a theme that fits your specific needs. Here are a few questions to ask before you find your new theme.

What is the Overall Goal of Your WordPress site?

This makes a big difference because a company looking to attract new customers will need a different theme than an individual interested in sharing their thoughts with the world. Make sure you understand the goal of your website first before looking for a WordPress theme.

What Type of Layout Fits Best?

For most websites, a simple layout with a sidebar and main content area will work best. However, some websites need a different type of layout with sliders and other features. Make sure you know what you need before you search for your custom theme.

Do you want a Free Theme or a Premium Theme?

There are many opinions about free vs. paid WordPress themes. However, it really just comes down to your needs. Free themes don’t offer as much for security and they usually are not updated as often as premium themes.

Now you know how to install a theme in WordPress and a few questions to ask before choosing the right theme for your specific needs. Whether you plan to run a company website or a personal blog, a custom WordPress theme can certainly help you create the right look and feel for your WordPress site.
