Do you Need a cPanel License?
A cPanel license is very important if you want to use cPanel as your administrative area for your hosting. However, this is usually something that comes along with your hosting package, depending on the type of hosting you choose. Typically, you only need a cPanel license when you own the server. If you purchase a shared, VPS, reseller or dedicated hosting package, you don’t own the server. This means the hosting company will supply you with the license.
What should you Expect when Purchasing a cPanel License?
When you choose a cPanel license for your hosting, you can expect to pay a fee either monthly or yearly. The licenses are directly available from cPanel on an annual basis and from a cPanel distributor on a monthly basis. Prices are as follows:
Direct from cPanel
- VPS – $15 – $20/month
- Dedicated Server – Varies
- Cloud Linux Server – Varies
Discounts are available on multiple licenses and on cPanel & WHM licenses. Support is also available with both purchase options, but priority is given to those purchasing cPanel licenses direct from cPanel.
Along with the regular pricing, cPanel offers discounted licenses, enterprise support and exclusive license management API if you become a partner. CPanel partners must order $300/month in licenses or more.
Can you Get a Trial License?
CPanel does offer a 15-day trial license for those qualifying. Once cPanel & WHM software has been installed, a 15-day trial license will be installed and will expire automatically after 15 days. The main qualification for the trial license is an IP address without a license history or a trial license issued in the past.
What are the System Requirements for cPanel?
If you’re considering a cPanel license, you want to make sure your server can handle it first. The minimum requirements for cPanel include:
- 266 MHz processor
- 512 MB RAM
- 20 GB Hard Disk
Along with these minimum requirements, it’s important to know what cPanel is compatible with. Some of the software it works with includes:
- Microsoft Server 2008 Hyper-V
- Oracle VM VirtualBox, VirtualBox OSE
- VMware Server, VMware ESX Server
- Xen, XenEneterprise, XenServer, Xen Experess
- CentOS versiosn 5.x and 6.x
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 5.x and 6.x
- CloudLinux 5.x and 6.x
For any other types of software or operating systems, you will need to contact the customer service department of cPanel first.
It’s strongly recommended that your server exceeds the minimum requirements, especially if you plan to run more than one domain name. If you don’t have enough space, RAM or a fast enough processor, you may not get the full cPanel experience and benefits.
What if You get an Error with your cPanel License?
Sometimes, hosting customers get an error with their cPanel license. It will state that the server is currently not licensed. If this happens, it means the cPanel license didn’t automatically renew, as it should.
Most hosting companies can fix this in just a few minutes. Just contact the technical support team and they will take care of the renewal for you. They will need your primary domain name and other information to identify your account.
