How can you Design a Better Website Footer?

Website FooterThe space at the bottom of your website is called the footer. This space needs to be utilized in the best possible way to serve your specific needs. There are certain things you can put here to get them out of the way of other things on your site. Some of the most common menu options for the footer include:

  • Contact Information
  • Link to your Sitemap
  • Copyright Notices
  • Policies
  • Links to Important Pages

This section of your website isn’t seen by all visitors, but many visitors know to look in the footer for specific things. Here are a few ways you can design a better footer for your website.

Simple, Clean Design

The first step in creating a great footer for your website is a simple and clean design. Obviously, it should match with your website, but it shouldn’t be too busy. If it goes from clean and simple to busy and complicated, it will turn people off from your website.

Avoid using any fancy fonts in your footer. Fancy fonts can be hard to read and your footer should be all business, all of the time.

Contact Info Goes in the Footer

You can display contact information in many places on your website, but it belongs in the footer, too. This is a very common place for people to go when they need to figure out how to contact you. If you don’t put contact information here, it can be difficult for people to find the right place to contact you, even if it’s displayed in other places.

Great Place for Social Buttons

Social ButtonsIf you are using social media, which you should be, the footer is a great place to link to your profiles and pages. Use social media buttons for all of your major outlets and you will be able to get far more out of your footer than if you leave them out.

Add your Copyright Information

Your website is yours and only yours. This means all images and information is copyrighted by you and doesn’t need to be used by anybody else without permission. You want to add your copyright notice to the footer to ensure it’s clear you own the content. If you plan to allow others to use some of the content on you site, you can use the phrase “Some Rights Reserved” instead of the common, “All Rights Reserved” copyright phrase.

Copyright InformationWith the growing issue of people stealing images and content they claim as their own, your copyright information is very important. If you use any type of software or program to track copyright infringement, the footer is a good place to display this information, as well.

There are plenty of ways you can design your footer, but not all of them will give you the function you need out of it. This isn’t the most important part of your website, but it’s still very important. Make sure you create an attractive, simple and clean footer for your business website before it goes live.
