Can you Create a Multilingual WordPress Website?

WordPress is the top CMS on the internet and will allow you to do just about anything. You can even create a WordPress website with multiple languages.

You won’t need to set up multiple websites on WordPress to cover each language. Instead, you can use the right tools to translate your content into the right language for your visitors. Here’s how it all works.

The Manual Translation Method

There are multiple ways to turn your WordPress website into a multilingual website. You can manually translate your content, which is known as a better approach when it comes to keeping the quality. This can be done by yourself or by a professional.

If you prefer to use this method, you can use Google Translate to add a multi-language switcher for the user. This will allow each user to select the language they prefer before they view the content.

With this method, you will also want to add the Polylang plugin for WordPress. This plugin makes it easier to manage multilingual content. After you have installed the plugin, you will be able to access it by going to Settings>>Languages.

When you click on this section of your dashboard, you will get a page that looks like this:

Polylang Settings

From this page, you can add the languages you want to use on your website and the translations the different content on your site. After you select a language and add it, you will be able to add the translation within the post edit screen. You will also get two more tabs in the settings page, which provide more settings you can adjust.

You will add your content in the default language, and then into the language you want to translate it next. This is done by clicking the + sign next to the language you want to use for content. Do this for all the languages you want to offer and you will be all set.

You will even be allowed to go to the categories section of your dashboard and translate a category into a different language.

The plugin will also give you a widget that will allow you to add a language switcher to your website. Just go to Appearance>>Widgets and add the language switcher widget to your sidebar.
